Container handling training Aceh PDF Print E-mail

After the tsunami in December 2005, Ecorys has been actively involved in restoration of the port infrastructure especially in Banda Aceh, where more than 100.000 people lost their lives in the aftermath of the disaster. Ecorys was responsible (on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs) for the turn-key delivery of the new port of Malahayati, 30 kilometers east of Banda Aceh.

After the successful opening of the new port in October 2008 it had already been concluded that training for the people who will run the port would be a necessary condition to ensure the sustainability of port operations in the longer term. In this respect Ecorys organised two training courses, one in June 2008, and one in April-June 2010.

For the latter one Ecorys ran three interactive training modules:

  1. Operations and maintenance
  2. Monitoring and evaluation
  3. Containerisation and international best practices

An international team of experienced trainers from Indonesia, the Netherlands and Hong Kong delivered the contents of the course, which was attended by 25 port officials from the Aceh region, and some representatives from local government and the University of Banda Aceh.

The training was very well received by participants.
